Solar One

Leading New York City into a renewable future

Project Intro

Solar One is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to design and deliver innovative education, training, and technical assistance that fosters sustainability and resiliency in diverse urban environments.

As the organization approaches new milestones in its 18-year history—including the development of an Environmental Education Center and expansions to many of its existing programs—CMYK recognized a need to reorganize and restructure the previous site’s robust collection of pedagogical material, engagement opportunities, and program content.

Tasked with a full site redesign, we sought to create a streamlined, inviting, and intersectionality-minded new digital space to house each of the organization’s subsidiary programs, and to make overall information architecture improvements to ensure the platform offers an accessible, yet comprehensive, approach to engaging users.

To accomplish this, we rebuilt the site’s structure from the ground up to better illustrate the organization’s breadth of programming, resources, and advocacy. By creating resource hubs related to specific programs, we allowed users to more easily and intuitively navigate to content related to their unique needs and by assigning color palettes to the organization’s key programs, we painted a fuller picture of the overall scope of Solar One’s mission.

Finally, knowing that user demands for the site varied considerably—whether that be registering for an event, sourcing educational materials, or seeking support for sustainable solutions in their own neighborhoods—we simplified means of contact, using clear, accessible approaches to forms. Important announcements and content features were also given striking new presentations to urge users forward, and support more meaningful approaches to engagement.
